STUART HOLDEN
TEAM LEADER - COMMUNICATIONS
I live locally with Lucy and our three children. I consider myself fortunate to live and work in such a beautiful and safe environment and remain passionate about ensuring the area continues to thrive for future generations.
Born and raised in Kendal, I have deep roots in the local community that extend far beyond my professional life.
For eighteen years, I have been part of the team instrumental in the remarkable growth of Kendal United Football Club, where I serve as Trustee and Chairman. My commitment to local causes is further demonstrated through my role as trustee of a local charity, reflecting my genuine desire to make a positive difference in the area I call home.
I have been the driving force behind Stramongate Press since taking over as Managing Director from my former business partner Peter Hartley.
I lead Stramongate's printing, design, signage, and workwear business across the northwest of England. My journey into the industry began with a chance job offer through a family friend. Still, my passion for the sector has enabled me to build extensive experience across many key areas of business and communications, before taking the helm at Stramongate Press.
As Managing Director, I bring a wealth of expertise spanning finance, human resources, IT, marketing, logistics and purchasing, ensuring our business continues to deliver exceptional service to clients throughout the region.
My diverse background across multiple industries gives me a unique perspective on understanding and meeting our customers' varied needs.
When not leading the business or supporting community initiatives, I can be found on the golf course, walking through the stunning South Lakeland countryside, or enjoying a game of football.
I was very honoured when I was asked to assist James Alexander as Team Leader – Communications for the Association.
I am responsible for editing the Westmorly Tory News and would love to get any input or ideas on what you would like to see in each month’s newsletter.

Westmorland ConservativesBacking The Lakes Line
Local Association Member Leads Push for Vital Transport Improvements
Mike Nicholson, a prominent member of the Westmorland and Lonsdale Conservative Association, is spearheading a campaign to secure crucial enhancements to the Lakes Train line that connects Oxenholme to the heart of the Lake District. Nicholson has been fighting for improvements to the railway for over a decade, demonstrating his long-term commitment to this vital infrastructure project.
The campaign, which has the full backing of the local Conservative association, aims to improve what many consider the most important railway link in Cumbria. The line serves as the primary gateway for the millions of visitors who travel to the Lake District National Park each year, whilst providing essential connectivity for local residents and businesses.
"This railway line is absolutely vital to our local economy and our community," said a spokesperson for the association. "Mike Nicholson recognises that without proper investment in this infrastructure, we risk undermining both our tourism industry and the daily transport needs of people living and working in the area."
The Lakes Line, which runs between Oxenholme Lake District station and Windermere, carries enormous significance as the only direct rail connection into the Lake District National Park. With many millions of visitors annually using this route, the ten-mile branch line represents far more than a simple transport link; it is an economic lifeline for the entire region.
However, the infrastructure is showing its age. The line, which first opened in 1847 but was converted to a single track in 1973, currently operates without passing loops, severely limiting both its capacity and frequency of services. This constraint means that only one train can use the line at any given time, creating bottlenecks and reducing the reliability of services.
The route connects five key destinations: Windermere, Staveley, Burneside, Kendal, and Oxenholme. However, passenger numbers frequently exceed capacity during peak tourist seasons, leading to overcrowding and disappointed visitors.
The Conservative campaign is advocating for comprehensive improvements that would transform the railway's capacity and environmental performance. Drawing on more than ten years of advocacy work, Mike has developed detailed proposals that focus on several key areas of improvement.
Electrification stands at the heart of the campaign. Previous government announcements recognised the importance of electrifying the line between Oxenholme and Windermere as part of broader railway investment across northern England. Electric trains would deliver faster, more reliable services whilst supporting environmental objectives by dramatically reducing carbon emissions compared to the current diesel rolling stock.
The campaign also supports a proposal to create a dynamic passing loop to the west of Burneside station. This infrastructure would enable trains to pass each other safely, significantly improving service frequency and reliability. The project would also include reinstating the missing platform at Burneside and providing better local connectivity.
Enhanced connectivity forms another pillar of the Conservative proposals. Improved rail links would support efforts to reduce traffic congestion on local roads, particularly the busy A590 and routes through the Lake District itself, whilst providing sustainable transport options for both residents and visitors.
Mike Nicholson's campaign emphasises that enhancing the Lakes Line aligns perfectly with Conservative principles of supporting economic growth whilst protecting the natural environment that makes the area so special.
Improved railway services would deliver substantial benefits to the local tourism industry. More frequent and reliable services would significantly increase the accessibility of the Lake District to visitors from across the United Kingdom, potentially leading to higher visitor numbers and increased economic benefits for local businesses. The rail link would alleviate traffic congestion on our already strained road infrastructure.
The enhancements would also support local enterprises by improving connectivity to broader markets and making it easier to attract skilled workers to the area. Better transport links are increasingly important for businesses seeking to recruit talent and maintain competitiveness.
Environmental considerations also feature prominently in the campaign. Electric trains produce zero local emissions, directly supporting national commitments to achieving net-zero carbon emissions. The improved railway would also help reduce road traffic through some of the most environmentally sensitive areas of the Lake District, preserving the tranquil character that visitors cherish.
The campaign builds on a strong track record of Conservative support for railway infrastructure projects across Cumbria. Previous Conservative governments and representatives have consistently recognised the benefits that enhanced transport links bring to residents, businesses, visitors and the environment.
This tradition of supporting vital transport infrastructure continues with the current campaign for Lakes Line improvements, demonstrating the party's ongoing commitment to practical policies that deliver real benefits for local communities.
Mike Nicholson's campaign is actively seeking to build broad community support for the railway enhancements. The Conservative Association believes that demonstrating strong local backing for the proposals will be crucial in securing the government's attention and investment.
Local businesses, tourism operators, environmental groups and community organisations are being encouraged to voice their support for the improvements. The campaign argues that better railway services would benefit virtually every sector of the local economy whilst supporting environmental objectives.
"This is not just about party politics," explained a campaign supporter. "This is about securing the future prosperity of our area and ensuring that the Lake District remains accessible to visitors whilst protecting its unique character for future generations."
The campaign represents a crucial opportunity to secure transformational improvements to one of Cumbria's most important transport links. After more than a decade of persistent advocacy, Nicholson's efforts have gained significant momentum with the full backing of the Westmorland and Lonsdale Conservative Association. The initiative now aims to build the political momentum necessary to secure government investment in the Lakes Line.
Success would deliver benefits that extend far beyond simple transport improvements. Enhanced railway services would support economic growth, protect the environment, reduce traffic congestion and ensure that the Lake District remains one of Britain's most accessible and beloved destinations.
As the campaign continues to gather support, the Conservative association remains confident that their vision for a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly Lakes Line can become a reality with sufficient political will and community backing.

BIG HITTER’S DINNER
Postponed.
We regret to announce that our Big Hitters Dinner has been postponed due to insufficient bookings. James Alexander and his team have worked tirelessly to organise what promised to be an excellent evening. We were truly honoured to have such a premier speaker as Lord Houchen.
While disappointing, this allows us to restructure and plan an even better event when we can guarantee the strong turnout it deserves. Our association has always been at its best when we come together as a community, and we know our members share our commitment to Conservative values in Westmorland and Lonsdale.
Our next event is the Strawberries & Cream and Cake & Tea afternoon - Thursday 21st Aug 2025. We look forward to seeing strong support from our membership.
Together, we can bring about change to a Conservative movement our constituency deserves.
Kendal Deserves Better: A Conservative Response to the 20mph Speed Limit Proposal
The Westmorland and Lonsdale Conservative Association believes that whilst road safety remains a paramount concern for all residents, the proposed blanket 20mph speed limit for Kendal town centre and residential estates requires careful scrutiny before implementation.
Our Position
We support evidence-based road safety measures that genuinely improve outcomes for residents whilst maintaining Kendal's economic vitality. However, we have serious concerns about the current 20mph proposal being championed by the Liberal Democrat-controlled Kendal Town Council and their colleagues at Westmorland and Furness Council.
Key Concerns About the Current Proposal
Economic Impact on Local Businesses
Kendal's town centre has already faced significant challenges in recent years, with many high street businesses struggling to compete with online retail and out-of-town shopping centres. The impact of traffic on Kendal's streets was identified as one of the primary concerns of residents, with the one-way system recognised as creating significant adverse impacts, including dramatically increasing the distances driven in the town.
A blanket 20mph limit could further discourage shoppers and visitors from accessing the town centre, potentially causing additional harm to local traders who are already working hard to maintain footfall. We need traffic solutions that support, rather than hinder, our local economy.
Questionable Implementation Costs
Kendal Town Council commissioned a study showing that a scheme covering the whole town could cost as much as £850,000, though other cost-effective solutions could be available for less than £50,000. At a time when Council Tax payers are facing significant financial pressures, we must question whether this represents the best use of public money.
With Westmorland and Furness Council investing £300,000 of ring-fenced funding to introduce 28 20mph schemes across the area, residents deserve transparency about the actual costs and benefits of each proposal.
Limited Evidence of Effectiveness
Whilst we acknowledge that international studies suggest lower speeds can reduce accident severity, the practical effectiveness of 20mph limits in similar market towns remains unclear. Data from Wales showed weighted mean speeds on main roads reduced by an average of 4mph over three months after 20mph limits were introduced, with average speeds dropping from 28.9mph to 24.8mph - suggesting many drivers were already travelling well below 30mph.
We question whether Kendal's specific traffic patterns and road layout make it suitable for this approach, particularly given the town's role as a gateway to the Lake District and its importance for tourism and freight movement.
Alternative Solutions We Support
Rather than a blanket approach, we propose targeted interventions that address specific safety concerns whilst preserving Kendal's accessibility:
Focused Safety Improvements
We support the implementation of targeted 20mph zones around schools, hospitals, and areas with demonstrable safety concerns. Concerns about Windermere Road at its junction with Queens Road and Green Road, where a crossing point is used by families walking to nearby primary schools and a nursery, illustrate the potential for specific interventions to have a significant safety benefit.
Investment in Infrastructure
Rather than simply changing speed limits, we advocate for investment in proper infrastructure improvements, including better pedestrian crossings, improved lighting, and clear sight lines that make roads genuinely safer for all users.
Support for the Kendal Northern Access Route
The proposed Kendal Northern Access Route would support future strategic growth in Kendal and improve access to existing employment areas as well as reduce congestion and increase network resilience within the town centre. This long-term solution would naturally reduce much of the through traffic in residential areas.
Technology-Based Solutions
Modern traffic management systems, including variable speed limits and smart traffic signals, could provide more flexible solutions that respond to actual traffic conditions rather than imposing blanket restrictions.
What We Want to See
The Westmorland and Lonsdale Conservative Association calls for:
Comprehensive Traffic Study: A detailed analysis of current traffic patterns, accident data, and economic impact before any implementation.
Genuine Community Consultation: The lower speed limits will only be introduced if community support is determined through consultation, but we want to ensure this includes businesses, commuters, and frequent visitors to Kendal, not just residents.
Phased Implementation: If any 20mph limits are introduced, they should be trialled in specific problem areas first, with proper monitoring of their effectiveness.
Economic Impact Assessment: A thorough evaluation of potential effects on local businesses, tourism, and freight movement.
Alternative Route Development: Prioritising the Kendal Northern Access Route to provide long-term traffic solutions.
Working Together for Kendal's Future
We recognise that road safety is not a party political issue. However, we believe that effective solutions require careful planning, proper consultation, and evidence-based decision-making. The current Liberal Democrat proposal appears to prioritise speed of implementation over thorough analysis.
Investment in the streets will raise the quality of Kendal and its attractiveness to visit, shop, live, work, and relax. We agree with this aspiration, but believe it requires a more sophisticated approach than simply reducing speed limits.
Our market town deserves traffic solutions that enhance both safety and prosperity. We remain committed to working with all stakeholders to find approaches that protect our residents whilst supporting Kendal's continued success as the gateway to the Lakes.
Get Involved
If you share our concerns about the current 20mph proposal, we encourage you to:
- Respond to the consultation with your views.
- Contact your local councillors.
- Attend public meetings about transport in Kendal.
Support our calls for comprehensive traffic planning.
Together, we can ensure that any changes to Kendal's roads truly serve the best interests of our community, our economy, and our future.
Calling for council candidates
With the all-out elections for Westmorland and Furness Council now less than two years away, it is essential that we here in Westmorland and Lonsdale field some top quality local candidates.
Currently, the Westmorland and Lonsdale area has no Conservative councillors representing us - and this must change in May 27.
We are looking for strong local candidates who would relish the challenge of standing for Westmorland and Furness Council, providing a much-needed Conservative voice on this fledgling unitary authority.
If you - or anyone you know - fits the bill, please get in touch with us at [email protected] or by calling Louise Thistlethwaite 0781 3636303.
We need Young Conservatives
Young voices bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions that keep our Conservative values relevant in a rapidly changing world.
By investing in the next generation of Conservative leaders today, we ensure our principles continue to shape policy and governance for decades to come.
Young members energise our campaigns with digital savvy, boundless enthusiasm, and genuine connections to voters their age—essential ingredients for electoral success in modern Britain.
Share this opportunity with friends, family, and colleagues who want to make a difference—together, we can build a stronger Conservative movement that reflects all generations and secures our future.

Arthur Moss Celebrates Century Milestone
We are delighted to congratulate Arthur Moss on reaching his remarkable 100th birthday, a milestone that reflects a lifetime of dedicated service to the Westmorland and Lonsdale Conservative Association.
Arthur's contributions to our association span many decades, during which he served as a loyal and efficient Agent to Michael Jopling throughout his parliamentary career. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to excellence were evident in his management of constituency matters from the offices at 112 Highgate, where he maintained what colleagues fondly remember as "a tight ship."
Beyond his administrative excellence, Arthur possessed a natural charm and diplomatic skill that proved invaluable to the association. He played an instrumental role in the formation of local branches, including the Levens Branch around 1980, where his gentle persuasion helped recruit new leadership for the growing organisation.
Arthur's dedication extended to regular attendance at Annual General Meetings and his oversight of the association's many branches, ensuring smooth operations across the constituency. His professionalism and good humour were appreciated by all who worked with him, even during the inevitable challenges of political campaigning.
On behalf of all members of the Westmorland and Lonsdale Conservative Association, we extend our warmest congratulations to Arthur on this extraordinary milestone and thank him for his years of distinguished service to our cause.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
While the general election and local elections are some time away, the next years are critical.
The Liberal Democrats, Reform and Labour are all pouring huge amounts of money into the fight hoping to change the results in this area.
We need to meet our fundraising target so we can dominate the battlefield in our home ground.
We know that when our campaigns are well resourced, they can beat the odds. People like you are the reason we can defy those odds and get our message to those all-important voters.
So please consider a donation or volunteering and help us get our message out.
It is the work we do now which will pay dividends when the votes are counted.
AND FINALLY……..
Don’t forget Jane Martin started in as our Communications and Administration Officer in May.
She has been training and working her way through the list of members to introduce herself.
Here is a photo of Jane. If you get a chance, be sure you pop into the office to meet her.
