Update from Cumbrian Conservatives
Cumbria is on the cusp of a political transformation - and Conservatives must seize the moment before it is lost.
Over the next 24 months, Conservatives have a critical opportunity to secure a Conservative Mayor and take control of two Councils.
The warning signs are already flashing. Reform UK has broken through in Egremont, snatching a Labour stronghold that stood firm for 35 years. Some may see this as a sign of Labour’s collapse; others may be tempted to dismiss it as a one-off protest vote. Both views would be dangerously complacent. Cumbria’s political landscape is shifting - and if we do not act decisively, we risk losing ground not just to Labour but to a rising populism that offers easy answers but no real solutions.
Unlike our Reform rivals, whose populist slogans and policy incoherence lean closer to the left than they might care to admit, Conservatives have something real to offer: competence, stability, and a proven record of delivery. However, voters will not discover this by accident. We must take our message to them - street by street, door by door, conversation by conversation.
The hard truth is that we need people. Not just candidates, but activists, organisers, doers. If we want to secure Cumbria’s future under strong Conservative leadership, we cannot afford to be passive. Recruitment must be our rallying cry.
Every Conservative member, supporter, and sympathiser must take it upon themselves to bring one new person into the fold this month. Imagine the energy, the reach, the renewed spirit that would create. My challenge to you is to find one person this month, and let us grow our Conservative family.
Best,
Matty
If you want to get involved, now is the time - let’s get to work.

MEET THE TEAM
JANET WARRINER
TEAM LEADER - VOLUNTEERS
Hello. I'm Janet Warriner, and I’ve been a committee member for two very interesting years. I was born in Helm Chase to a farming family from Old Hutton. As the third girl in a family of four, I knew I had to make my mark at a young age, and I assuredly did. My sisters will be testament to that.
I've volunteered in many sectors. The first thing I did upon arriving home from Belgium, where I had worked for two years, was to go to Bendrigg Lodge in 1978, just as it opened. My working life has been in customer service, and even at my young age, I'm still working at Lakeland.
My membership has never wavered, but my despair at things that have happened in the party that are out of our control has been overwhelming at times. I've been a supporter since before I was old enough to vote. It's therefore very important we start now to make a difference locally; we are a Tory area, and we need to be loud and proud about it.
I was honoured when James, our new Team Leader, asked me to lead the volunteers. A chat and a coffee at Alexander's was all it took for me to say yes, and I will do my best to succeed. Volunteers are the backbone of political campaigns and local offices, and they work to promote and drive positive change. The office with Jane, our new communications and administration officer, will be open from 10 to 1, Monday to Friday. There's a lot for her to do, and your expertise and time are needed during those times.
She can’t do this alone - we need each and every one of you to do a bit. No day will be the same, and we're sure you'll have lots of fun meeting some fantastic people whilst supporting our cause. There will be unlimited tea and coffee (even if you do have to make your own). It's not just about manning the office, it’s about creating connections, inspiring others and building a stronger Westmorland and Lonsdale conservative party. Each hour you give will help grow and strengthen the party locally and nationally.
We have flexible hours to fit around you, so tell me how you can get involved today. Short on time? Whether you have five minutes or a few hours, there are great ways to give your time in a way that works for you.
My contact details are below. Please contact me; you don't need to wait for me to contact you.

Meet the team supper
Guest speaker Nigel Wilkinson MBE
Conservative Association Hosts Successful "Meet the Team Supper"
On Thursday, 17th April, James Alexander and his team welcomed members and guests of the association to our first social event of 2025, "Meet the Team Supper". The evening commenced with drinks in the Stone Cross Manor Hotel foyer, where attendees socialised before being welcomed into the dining room for a fantastic cooked meal and after-dinner speech from Nigel Wilkinson MBE.
Nigel Wilkinson, managing director of Windermere Lake Cruises, spoke about the tremendous importance of tourism to the Cumbrian economy. He highlighted that domestic tourism in Cumbria was worth more than international tourism, generating approximately 4.7 billion pounds in 2024 and supporting 46,000 full-time equivalent jobs, representing 29 per cent of all employment in Cumbria. Wilkinson explained how the visitor economy also supports indirect supplies, professional services and supply chains, strengthening the region's overall economic health. He shared the history of Windermere Lake Cruises, which traces its origins to around 1850, with the current business established in 1968 and the formation of Windermere Lake Cruises in 1993 following the acquisition of the Windermere Steamboat Company.
Wilkinson discussed the significant challenges faced during the coronavirus pandemic, including the loss of 400,000 passengers in 2020, though the company has since recovered to 1.3 million passengers. Despite difficulties in building their new boat, the MB Swift, during the pandemic, with construction spread across Europe, the company continued to operate and develop their fleet of electric boats and a new high boat facility at Lakeside. He explained that the business faces ongoing economic challenges, including the cost of living crisis, increased costs for utilities, insurance, and fixed-rate mortgages, and Labour government policies such as increases in national insurance and the national living wage that have added significant operational costs.
Nigel addressed environmental concerns, particularly water quality issues in Windermere. He described how the company has partnered with various organisations, including local authorities, government agencies, and major landowners, to address lake nutrient enrichment and algal blooms. Wilkinson emphasised the importance of tackling these water quality issues without damaging the local economy and the livelihoods dependent on tourism. He expressed gratitude for the support of Matty Jackman in promoting the visitor economy and addressing environmental challenges, while also expressing frustration with government policies that fail to recognise the specific needs of small and medium-sized businesses like his, particularly regarding the potential negative impact of a proposed tourism tax that could make the United Kingdom less competitive as a destination.
Nigel touchingly shared his love for Leeds United Football Club as a lifelong supporter, adding a personal note to his informative presentation.
Matty Jackman took the floor to thank Nigel and field a question and answer session. When asked if a recent visit by Princess Kate to Cumbria would have a positive impact on tourism figures, Nigel recalled the time the Queen visited. "My proudest day ever was when Her Majesty the Queen came and sailed with us. Apart from just the experience of hosting Her Majesty, the benefit of that positive exposure was absolutely fantastic. And I think Catherine's affinity with the Lake District, I know that the King has a great affinity with the Lake District as well."
Our host, James Alexander, then warmly thanked both Nigel and Matty. James paid particular thanks to Matty, who stood as our parliamentary candidate, and has been a great inspiration to the association.
James then passionately presented the "Way Forward" plan, our business plan, which he developed with his team. He spoke about the great relationship developing with Ben Shirley and his team from the Barrow association, before introducing his brand-new team leaders.
James first introduced Louise Thistlethwaite, who has taken the role of Deputy Chair – Political. Louise is a dedicated Conservative with varied professional experience. She attended school in the borough and now lives in the area. She has worked as a university lecturer in Lancaster and as a journalist at the Barry Lee Mail. She works with the council, bringing valuable insider knowledge of power structures to the Conservative team. Her experience is crucial in helping the Conservatives win control of their destiny in South Lakes and Furness, rather than focusing on London. The immediate goal is to increase Conservative representation on town councils, district councils, and ultimately in the Westmoreland and Furness district, creating a foundation to support the parliamentary ambitions of our candidate, Matty.
Louise emphasised that the Conservative Association is focused on getting Conservative candidates selected and elected at all levels - from local councillors to the mayoral position and parliamentary representation. She highlighted the critical need to gain Conservative councillors on the Westmoreland and Furness Council, noting that while they have strong representation from Barrow and Eden, there are currently no Conservative councillors from Westmoreland and Lonsdale. The team has identified five target seats in Westmoreland and Lonsdale and plans to engage with voters in the coming months to understand why people might not have voted Conservative previously. Louise stressed the importance of selecting quality candidates who would make excellent councillors, and encouraged everyone present to identify potential Conservative candidates, even if they are not currently party members, to help break the Liberal Democrat stronghold in the area.
Stuart Holden, Team Leader - Communications, was next to speak. Stuart is a true local, born in the area and having lived here for 47 years. He is the Managing Director of Stramongate Press and other businesses, bringing extensive expertise in business and communications to the team. Stuart has taken on the role of editor for "The Westmorley Tory News," a Conservative newsletter published on the first Thursday of each month. The name of the publication was suggested by Catherine, James's wife, and it serves as an essential communication channel for the local Conservative Association.
Stuart outlined his communication strategy, which combines traditional methods with newer approaches. He plans to increase the use of social media to attract younger supporters while continuing to produce leaflets, which he believes remain effective campaign tools. Stuart's primary goal is to support James, Louise, and the other team leaders in reaching and attracting people to the Conservative Association and challenging what he described as the "awful stranglehold" that Liberal Democrats have in the area. James added that Stuart welcomes contributions to "The Westmorly Tory News," encouraging people to send letters to the editor, articles, and photographs for publication.
James then introduced Janet Warriner, Team Leader - Volunteers. Janet has recently joined the leadership team as the Volunteer Coordinator, taking on what is widely acknowledged as one of the most challenging roles in the organisation. As James humorously noted, "Trying to herd chickens is probably easier than herding volunteers," highlighting the demanding nature of Janet's position.
With a warm personality and exceptional organisational skills, Janet brings structure and purpose to the volunteer efforts. She coordinates the activities of dedicated supporters, ensuring that each person's talents and time are used effectively. Whether it's arranging door-knocking campaigns, organising leaflet distribution, or coordinating presence at community events, Janet will work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the local Conservative Association run smoothly.
Janet's approach combines enthusiasm with practicality. She understands that volunteers are the lifeblood of the association, and she's developed a system that respects people's limited availability while maximising their impact. As the association looks to strengthen its presence across Westmorland and Lonsdale, Janet's leadership of the volunteer team will be instrumental in building the grassroots support needed for future electoral success.
James took the opportunity to thank everyone who had attended and reminded them about the Big Hitters Dinner happening Thursday 19th June 2025. The event will feature a prestigious Conservative speaker who will be announced in the next few weeks. Final touches are being confirmed, and James assured attendees that it is one not to be missed.
The evening concluded with attendees chatting enthusiastically about the plans presented and the bright future ahead for the Conservative Association in Westmorland and Lonsdale.
