Tidal Power Row: Tim Farron Defends Renewable Energy Push After Expert Criticism
Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has hit back after pensions and finance expert Tom McPhail accused him of “wasting” money and parliamentary time by promoting tidal energy. McPhail argued the technology is too costly and inefficient compared to gas, oil and nuclear, questioning why tidal power isn’t more widely used if it is truly viable.
Farron, who spoke in the House of Commons on 12 November, acknowledged the high upfront costs but insisted tidal and marine energy offer long-term savings, energy security and job creation in Cumbria. He said dismissing the technology is a short-term view and that investing now would secure sustainable benefits for the future.
Tidal power, which generates electricity from natural tidal movements, remains at the centre of a growing debate over the UK’s energy strategy and the balance between affordability, reliability and environmental responsibility.
